BlackBerry Postpones BBM For Android & iPhone, Blaming Leak - BlackBerry has pushed back its BBM app for Android and iOS to an indefinite unharness date, citing problems caused from the unauthorized post last week in an older, unreleased version from the Andoid app on various file sharing sites.
Also last week, BlackBerry demo'd the new app at Pepcom's Holiday Spectacular! press event in New York City, talking up intentions to unharness the Android version on September 21 and also the iPhone version on September 22.
In a blog post on Monday, aleven however, Andrew Bocking, head of BBM at BlackBerry, aforesaid that this recent version from the app leaked last week " resulted in volumes of knowledge traffic orders of magnitude above normal for every active user and impacted the internal system in abnormal ways. "
Added Bocking : " The version we're planning to unharness on Saturday addressed these problems, but we couldn't block users from the unreleased version if we went ahead using the launch. We attempted to address the issues caused from the unreleased version during the day on Saturday, however as active users from the unreleased app neared a million -- and accelerated -- it became clear that this solely method to address the difficulty was to pause the rollout for each Android and iPhone. "
The BBM messaging app has long been a serious selling purpose for BlackBerry phones. Rumors of the potential impending app for Android and iOS 1st started surfacing early last year. In announcing the app at BlackBerry World in May of in 2012, BlackBerry mapped out plans to unharness the app during the summer.
The app for competing Android and iOS phones offers all a similar features as BBM for BlackBerry except video chat, a spokesperson aforesaid, throughout a demo for Brighthand in the Pepcom show.
Capabilities embrace multi-person chats, voice sharing, and BlackBerry Groups, for sharing calendars, photos and files among up to 30 individuals.
